iTunes UiTunes U
In spring 2008, the City University of New York embarked on a university-wide, collaborative effort coordinated by the Project Management Office of The City University of New York to establish a CUNY presence on iTunes U. The project encompasses the university and its 23 colleges and schools. KCC's pilot is led by Professors Rosson, Troudt, and Winkler. Virtual Enterprise at KCC is planning to use audio and video podcasts to develop supporting “content nuggets” that can be used (and reused) by as many Virtual Enterprise (VE) classes as possible. These nuggets will be shared and made available through an iTunes U content repository (for general research) as well as on online course sites (for targeted purposes). Students will then be able to access these podcasts directly on their computer or by downloading them to their portable media players. In addition, the students will be given the opportunity to capture their work in both audio and video, and use them to document their classroom work by creating an e-PODfolio that they can share with their peers and other students from other VE classes.
The Communication and Culture Consortial Faculty of the CUNY Online Baccalaureate Program, led by George Otte, Academic Director of the Program and CUNY IT Director, and represented at Kingsborough by Professors Hess, King, LaFont, and Walters, also received one of the iTunes University small grants. Professor King, LaFont, Taras, and Walters presented different styles of podcasting at the recent KCC IT Convocation break-out sessions. The Consortial Faculty is resisting "a template-driven" approach, viewing the project as "a seedtime for experimentation." Eight faculty members from the Online Baccalaureate will be contributing to the iTunes project, which promises much technological innovation throughout CUNY. The Academic Director of the Business degree in the CUNY Online Baccalaureate is KCC's Stu Schulman, Director of the Institute for Virtual Enterprise, underscoring the key roles played by a number of Kingsborough faculty in this new endeavor.
